As of May 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 55,315, with 17,386 households and a population density of 82.70 persons per km². The total area is 668.86 km². The modern city of Nanto was established on November 1, 2004, from the merger of the towns of Fukuno, Inami and Jōhana, the villages of Inokuchi, Kamitaira, Taira and Toga (all from Higashitonami District), and the town of Fukumitsu (from Nishitonami District).
